Only the Best General Contractors Know This About Hiring
I’ve worked with a lot of GCs of different cultures and sizes. And I’ve come to realize there’s one thing only the most efficient and profitable companies know.
It’s something I actually realized very early in my recruiting days. And if I could go back, I’d probably decide not to even work with certain companies based on this one thing.
That is:
It’s more important (and easier) to hire people that integrate well into your company’s culture than to hire someone purely based on skills.
Skills and processes can be learned. Culture, values and coachability cannot be learned.
In a tight labor market like today’s, usually you just aren’t going to find the needle in the haystack. (Not unless you want to wait 3 years… or pay 25% over market rate)
The labor shortage in construction isn’t gonna disappear in the next decade. To get great employees, you have to be willing to do what other companies won’t. You must invest in the right people. Everyone prefers the person with 20 years experience, but you should be open minded to the candidate with 10. If they’re a fast learner and fit in - they aren’t too far from what you were looking for in the first place. If they fit in at your company, they’ll be a worthy investment.
